Moments in Construction

by H. Suzuki

TJ: What makes a good picture stand out from an average photo?
Suzuki: A good picture moves viewers. Good pictures extract the intention of objects and invoke the feelings of viewers. In other words, a dialogue between objects and viewers is enabled.

TJ: Location and weather conditions seem to be crucial aspects to a successful picture. How do you handle these unpredictable factors?
Suzuki: I canโ€™t control them, so it canโ€™t be helped. But I think I am lucky in terms of unpredictable factors. For four years, I had a lot of luck. For example, I took a picture of 2,000 people gathered at a morning meeting in a construction area. Although such meetings were planned to be held regularly after that, they didnโ€™t happen again. I need to rely on luck and instinct.

Moments in Construction Photography

TJ: What kind of camera and lens do you use? Why?
Suzuki: I use a Nikon D90. I believe Nikon and Canon are the only options for cameras. I donโ€™t get a new one so frequently. I am the type of person who sticks with a long-time love. I take pictures based on my interests, and I donโ€™t have to handle requests from clients, so I can choose cameras freely. Sometimes a very good shot can be taken with a simple compact camera. For example, when Iโ€™m walking and I come across very good and unexpected scenery, I take a picture of it, resulting in a very good shot. Sometimes even a mobile phone camera works well too.

TJ: When you go to photograph something, what do you take with you? Why?
Suzuki: At construction sites, a helmet is indispensable. Safety belts are needed for taking pictures from high places. I also bring two cameras with different lenses. Generally, since we can change lenses on the site, one camera is enough, but it is sometimes troublesome to change lenses at construction sites. So I bring two cameras to avoid changing lenses.

TJ: What are the top skills to have to be a successful photographer?
SUZUKI: Instinct is essential. It is like animalsโ€™ acuteness to feel a presence of prey. In other words, optical inspiration or an extremely sensitive sense of noticing something.

TJ: What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
SUZUKI: I always feel that I wish I knew a lot of things. Especially in terms of digital cameras, I have to know the latest information.

TJ: If you could go back and change something related to your education or your life that would impact your career as a photographer, what would you change or what would you do differently?
SUZUKI: I donโ€™t want to change anything in the past. Everything I experienced all together evolved into my present career. My past as a whole has resulted in the present situation.

TJ: How do you train or educate yourself to take better pictures?
SUZUKI: I have been building up my physique. Because body strength is required at construction sites, and I donโ€™t want to cause trouble. So I take care of my physique deliberately. Otherwise, I tend to stay in the building all day for my other jobs.

TJ: What are the pros and cons of being a photographer?
SUZUKI: Photography is just an activity for me. I would say that a photographer can stop time by capturing a scene. Then I have to figure out how to present the pictures to the audience as a project or assignment. From the viewpoint of a man taking pictures, I relate everything I face as a photograph automatically. These are pros and cons at the same time.

TJ: What is your greatest fear with regards to your career in photography?
SUZUKI: I donโ€™t want to cause any trouble to others. I hate it if any problems happen because of my pictures.

TJ: What does photography mean to you?
SUZUKI: It is a mirror reflection of myself. Through pictures, I rediscover my aesthetic. It is difficult to embody aesthetic, so it is the only way for me.

TJ: What words would your friends use to describe you?
SUZUKI: Cool. Enviableโ€ฆ

TJ: Why do you think Tokyo is an ideal location for the 2020 Olympics?
SUZUKI: As the capital of a nation that experienced disaster, we have to hold the event that provides hope and encourages people. We want to fill a void.

TJ: If the 2020 Olympics are held in Tokyo, what aspects of it would you like to photograph?
SUZUKI: If I have a chance, I want to capture the whole process from demolition to new construction of the National Olympic stadium. For example, pictures of a vacant field and one with a full audience. I like still pictures that express the past drama like moving pictures. I am interested in the process before the event. So it is preferable that Japanese TV programs focus not only on the games but also on the process that the players experience. It is not good to place the
result above the process. tj
